Galvan Tapped As Defensive Player Of The Year

POSTED May 26, 2009 5:00 p.m.
After putting together a quality career for the Oakdale Lady Mustang softball program, the Valley Oak League coaches recognized her efforts in selecting Oakdale senior Monique Galvan for the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Galvan, Oakdale’s first baseman since the departure of standout Sissy Jiminez, shared the honors with Manteca High’s Trina Solario to cap off Oakdale’s VOL Championship season.
Galvan’s work did not diminish during the Lady Mustangs’ postseason run, as the senior workhorse hit nearly .500 for Oakdale during their section runner-up tournament showing at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton.
Oakdale also saw its two-headed pitching tandem of Andrea Lutz and Brianna Parker walk away with All-VOL First Team nods for their pitching dominance. Parker and Lutz turned in quality start after quality start for Oakdale, with the pair combining for just three losses on the season.
Shortstop and third baseman Danielle Onken and MacKenzie Taylor, respectively, were recognized on the All-VOL second team for their efforts on the 2009 season. Onken battled injury over the final few weeks of the season, but came on in time to make quality contributions for Oakdale’s playoff push.
Taylor continued her career-long dominance since arriving at Oakdale. In a season that saw its ups and downs, Taylor was the other constant opposite Galvan in the core of the Lady Mustang’s infield.
Senior catcher Heather Snow earned a berth on the league’s All-Defensive Team after handling the talented Lady Mustang pitching staff with relative ease. Snow erased any uncertainties the squad may have had with the graduation of starter Ashton Brown, filling in promptly at the season’s beginning.
A perfect VOL season at the junior varsity level will undoubtedly leave Oakdale with a quality talent pool to pull from to defend the squad’s 2009 VOL Championship.
