Oakdale voters will be voting for mayor, two open city council seats and determining whether or not to extend a half-cent sales tax assessment on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Measure Y asks voters to extend a half-cent sales tax that proponents claim is critical for maintaining public safety and other city services.

In 2011, voters passed Measure O which took the city’s sales tax from 7.625 percent to 8.125 percent, bringing in over $1.5 million to city coffers. That measure is set to expire in March 2015.

Measure Y asks that the half-cent be continued for another five years.

In the mayor and council race, there is no competition, with only two persons, Cherilyn Bairos and J.R. McCarty, running for two vacant council seats and Pat Paul running unopposed for mayor.

Paul, 71, was elected mayor in 2010 and has previously served on the council and Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors.

Bairos, 40, is an insurance agent in town and sits on the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission and is on the Chamber of Commerce board.

McCarty, 41, is a manager at Cost Less Foods and serves on the city’s Traffic Commission. Previously he served as treasurer for the city in 2012.

Both ran for council seats and were defeated in the 2012 General Election.

Statewide, this is also a gubernatorial election year, with incumbent Gov. Jerry Brown seeking reelection, facing off with challenger Neel Kashkari.

Other races of interest in the Oakdale area are in the 10th Congressional District, where incumbent Congressman Jeff Denham is being challenged by Michael Eggman and in the State Assembly’s 12th District, where incumbent Kristin Olsen is being challenged by Harinder Grewal.

Polls will be open on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and for more information on where you can find your polling place, call the Stanislaus County Registrar of Voters at 209-525-5200 or visit stanvote.com.
