Knights Ferry News Week of July 23, 2014

POSTED July 22, 2014 3:21 p.m.

There is a new sign up on the highway, a gateway sign for Knights Ferry. It points to the town and tells that there is food and recreation there. Sponsors for the sign so far are: River’s Edge, 50’s Roadhouse, River Journey, Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates and the Ice Cream and Sweets Shop. It looks really nice.

*****

Gary and Sharon Page have returned from Colorado where they visited their son Travis, his wife Pam and grandchildren Preston and Grant. They enjoyed the drive and the visit.

*****

There have been more walking tours for the Ferry printed and are at the Ice Cream Parlor for visitors to tour the town and learn some history.

*****

Michael McKibban was the recipient of the “Birthday Song” at the 50’s Roadhouse last Wednesday.

*****

Spencer Shook saw his cat looking at something so he investigated and found a rattlesnake coiled up. Dad Gary came and dispatched it. It was 3 feet long and had six buttons! Be watchful as they are out and about now!

*****

Jeremy Page saw a mountain lion recently. He says they like to go up and down Squaw Gulch hunting deer. Lions also have been sighted crossing Orange Blossom Road.

*****

Knights Ferry Creamery and Sweets Shop is open Thursdays through Mondays from noon to 6 p.m. (or later if customers).

In June of 1981 the Stanislaus County Department of Public Works closed the covered bridge to traffic, thereby cutting off the town and making it a 30-mile detour. The fire department had to station a fire truck on the other side of the bridge for emergencies. It was a blow to the local businesses, as tourists couldn’t cross from the highway, nor could moms from Willms Road drop off their children at school. Until the county rented a Bailey Bridge and placed it by the firehouse, the town was very cut off. There are not many still living in town that remember those days.
