Oscar R. Wedegaertner, 91, died at home on Sunday, April 21.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1921 in Oakdale, the seventh of eight children born to Gustav and Louise Wedegaertner. He grew up in Valley Home, and graduated from Oakdale High School. He was involved in the Future Farmers of America, and was State President of the California Young Farmers. He exhibited pigs and won awards at the 1939 World’s Fair. He met and married Marilyn Pardue in 1952. Together they had three daughters, Susan, Kelly and Debbie. He was a cherished husband and father.

Mr. Wedegaertner was a captain in the Salida Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. He had been a board member on the Stanislaus Union School District for 12 years and served as president during his tenure. He loved children and was known for bringing the fire truck, during Fire Prevention Week, and “George” the turkey, at Thanksgiving, to schools for many years for the children’s education and enjoyment.

He was a lifelong farmer in the Modesto and Oakdale area. He was a walnut and chicken rancher. After retirement he loved raising and showing his prized orchids, and was a proud member of the Modesto Tropical Plant Society for over 30 years.

His true joys in his life were his four grandchildren. He was a wonderful grandpa and was always involved in their lives.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Marilyn; daughters Susan, Kelly Thomas (Matt), and Debbie Kleinfelder (Jim); and grandchildren Max and Joe Thomas, Emily and Alex Kleinfelder.

A Remembrance and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 27 from noon to 3 p.m. at 1348 Kiernan Ave., Modesto.
